Karl spoke at the 2103 Consumer Med Summit in Laguna Nigel. The conference was about medicine in 2023 - ten years out - what will be required. This is an eecerpt from his talk on how people, not consumers or patients, will need to be engaged.
There will be three types of people in 2023:
The traditional patients who want an all poserful doctor who will just make it go away. He calls this the Wizard of Oz and it represents a traditional view of medicine. The Doctor knows what to do and the patient wants that authority to make htem better.
The second person is a consumer. Their expectation is like Dr. Oz. They want to interact with the doctor to be involved in the decision making. They are very informed and the experience takes its cues from retail selling. This is what we have seen mostly as improvements in patient care. It is often called patient-centric.
The third person you will see in 2013 is the digital native's mindset. They are in control of the game. If it were a game, they would find hte best doctors, have lots of information on their capabilities and they would choose when and where to play that character. While merely a metaphor, medicine will see this kind of flipping of control. Now is the time to start planningfor that change...as you continue topractice traditional and retail approaches to health care.
